What are Dental Implants?

A dental implant consists of three parts:
- Implant – The artificial, titanium tooth root that is seated within the jawbone.
- Abutment – The metal connector piece that attaches the restoration to the implant post.
- Restoration – The crown, bridge, or denture that is secured on top of the implant and abutment.
Their versatility makes them a great solution for anyone who is missing one or more teeth, and their lifelike appearance makes it nearly impossible for people to be able to tell the difference between real and artificial teeth.
The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

- Initial Dental Implant Consultation – The first step in this process is to meet with your implant dentist in Chicago, Dr. Rosen. Not only will he examine your mouth with digital radiographs and a CT/cone beam scanner, but he’ll also conduct a visual evaluation and discuss whether you require preliminary treatment to address anything that could prevent long-term success, like gum disease, bone loss, or dental decay.
- Dental Implant Surgery – Rosen has the training and skill to provide the surgical placement of your implant posts in-house, so you can remain with a team you already know and trust. After providing local anesthesia to numb your mouth, he will position each implant into your jawbone so that it fuses correctly and establishes a firm foundation for your future smile.
- Dental Implant Osseointegration/Abutment – Each implant post must fuse with the bone and its nearby tissues through osseointegration. This process can take 4-6 months on average, so you must follow all necessary instructions to ensure you heal thoroughly and properly. Once Dr. Rosen believes you are ready, you will return to receive your metal abutments, which will be attached to your implant posts.
- Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s) – And finally, you will receive your customized restoration. This uniquely crafted crown, bridge, or denture will be the last piece of the dental implant process, allowing you to finally start experiencing the benefits of a full smile again.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants…
- Act like natural teeth, allowing you to eat all the foods you love and be free of any dietary restrictions.
- Have a long lifespan of at least 30 years. Some cases indicate they can remain in place for a lifetime, but you must commit to taking care of them if you want to avoid possible replacement in the future.
- Are crafted to look completely natural, so you can expect your artificial teeth to mimic your real ones in look, size, and shape.
- Promote improved oral health by reducing the risk of dental drift – the shifting of teeth over time – and jawbone resorption – the depletion of the underlying bone that occurs following tooth loss.
- Are easy to maintain, requiring no special products. All you need is daily brushing/flossing along with routine dental checkups at least twice a year.
